Last night Australian ready-to-wear brand bassike, best known for it’s considered and design-led style, showcased its Resort 2020 collection at MBFWA with an intimate dinner and presentation at The Apollo Restaurant.

Building the bassike mood board for Resort 20, creative director Deborah Sams was inspired by a spirit of playfulness. With a view to lend optimism to the modern woman’s wardrobe, Sams has developed a collection that celebrates the depth and vibrancy of life.

“I felt really strong about introducing colour this season,” Sams explains. “This is something we have shied away from in the past, but it just felt right for Resort and our show. This injection of colour is expressed in unexpected ways throughout the collection. An international mindset is balanced in the collection naturally by a distinctly Australian sense of effortlessness – one which has come to characterize the bassike brand DNA and permeates this latest collection as well.

“Internationally, women are looking to build wardrobes that are both timeless and easy to put together,” Sams explains. “So when I design, I am thinking about wearability; about creating pieces that are universal and can be worn all over the world. ”



For Resort 20, effortlessness is expressed through cut-away detailing and shorter proportions, both of which celebrate the strength and athleticism of the female form. More subtly, it is present in the collection’s underlying sustainability- which remains an intuitive consideration for Sams and her design team.

A collection built around versatility and longevity, Resort 20 features classic fabrications that have been reworked or evolved, with an eye both for consciousness and wearability. “We are not only a lifestyle brand specialising in jersey T-shirts,” Sams says. “We are developing effortlessly chic collections that can be elevated from work to the weekend.”

This is a crossover that appeals to women right across the globe and it has also been a guiding principle behind bassike Resort 20 presentation at The Apollo. “The Apollo is one of our favourite Sydney restaurants and a beautiful space. We really wanted this presentation to be a curated bassike moment for our guests, and also nod to our minimal aesthetic and Mediterranean summer. The space itself is very raw, and to minimise any excess waste, we have pared back unnecessary styling and printed materials in keeping with our commitment to sustainability.

Resort 20 launches November 2019.
